Harold the Bear and the B-Boy Quilt

As some of you know, I’m a little obsessed with giving gift “sets” for baby gifts. Generally the set will be a quilt and bibs, burps and a ball. But, this time it is a bear. And I actually saw the pattern for the bear first and then whipped up this quick quilt to go…

That quilt is beautiful! I just bought a fat quarter pack of Michael Miller gray and blue….this will be a perfect quilt for me to make!

Latifah - January 24, 2011 - 10:41 am

Haha! I’ll try to make this explanation quick Alison. My sole motivation for quilting (or any sewing) is to see the creative visions in my head come to life. Sewing a pattern is boring to me. And, unless it is something that I REALLY want to see made or unless I am creative with the changes I make to patterns to make them “my own:, I generally don’t like the process of just sewing from a pattern. Believe me, “pains” is not an understatement here. Just one of my quirks that I have come to embrace! Haha!

Alison Marie - January 22, 2011 - 12:22 pm

It pains you to use patterns?!!! I think I get what you mean, but tell me more….

Patty Simmons - January 22, 2011 - 7:50 am

Your baby gifts must be quite coveted! You are so ingenious!

Victoria - January 10, 2011 - 6:18 pm

Serious cute you are, Harold. ;-)

Marianne Haak - January 10, 2011 - 6:13 pm

I absolutely love the baby quilt and of course Harold is adorable too. I love the black binding with the white…so sharp!!!!!

DianeY - January 10, 2011 - 11:54 am

I’m not sure which I love better! Beautiful quilt & truly huggable Harold!

Herringbone Linen – Modern Whole Cloth Quilt

I love looking at quilting in new and fresh ways. Oftentimes “new and fresh” refers to looking at traditional and established methods and making them your own. I’ve been thinking a lot about designing whole cloth quilts. I’m a little hesitant in calling this a “whole cloth quilt” because most whole cloth quilts are such…

Oh I just love this. Very clean, fresh and I love the thread choice too. Excellent quilting.

laura lewis - April 24, 2011 - 1:09 am

seriously. i very rarely comment on blogs, this is INCREDIBLE.

Peacock Chic - April 15, 2011 - 9:59 am

Amazing!!! The design is so simple yet looks so AMAZING. Love the color choices too.

amandajean - March 9, 2011 - 9:56 am

this is an utterly fabulous quilt! nice, nice work!

Cheryl Arkison - January 28, 2011 - 3:52 pm

I’ve had herringbone on the brain too, but haven’t acted on it. This is incredible!

Bonnie - January 25, 2011 - 9:28 pm

Love your blog, Latifah. It is so YOU!

Latifah - January 24, 2011 - 10:46 am

Yes mjb, I find that restraint is one of the biggest design challenges but, when it is effectively utilized the result can be stunning! So glad you like it!

mjb - January 15, 2011 - 8:56 am

I love the bold solids here – I would’ve been tempted to use a print on one side, I think. The quilting is really beautiful.

Kate - January 10, 2011 - 11:55 am

LOVE. I love everything about this quilt, simply gorgeous!

NancyinSTL - January 10, 2011 - 10:11 am

I love your quilting aesthetic and just realized that this was another one of your quilts. To me modern means beautiful in simplicity, so I think calling this quilt a modern whole cloth is right on the money. You seem to know how to make just the right choices of colors, fabrics, thread, and design.

By the way, the pattern in the bricks behind your quilt would make a great quilt design too.

Margaret - January 9, 2011 - 4:37 pm

Love this! The green in the binding looks like it’s from Basic Grey’s ‘Origins’ line.

abi - January 7, 2011 - 8:33 pm

I favorited this on Flickr and didn’t even realized it was you! I should have known…you always make my favorite quilts :) Awesome work, as usual.

Angie - January 7, 2011 - 7:43 pm

Beautiful quilting – it really is a nice way to make a thicker stitch. Great job!!

nichole - January 7, 2011 - 12:27 pm

i have been dreaming of herringbone so much lately! this is so, so lovely. great job!

Melissa - January 7, 2011 - 11:12 am

Stunning. Absolutely stunning. I love the variegated thread, too! What a nice touch. :o )

Liz Harvatine - January 7, 2011 - 9:46 am

I love it so much Latifah! It looks so cute in the room and I can’t wait for the baby to use it!

Sara L. - January 7, 2011 - 9:26 am

Wow! I came here from flickr, because I love this quilt, and the close-ups in this blog are making me a little faint! That thread is luscious. I think I have to go to the quilt store…

Beautiful job!

Stephanie - January 7, 2011 - 5:51 am

I love this quilt so much it’s making me feel a little woozy. Now I NEED to make a modern whole cloth quilt.

kelly - January 7, 2011 - 5:51 am

like everything else you make, this is beautiful and interesting. i enjoyed just reading this post, too! i guess i did a “whole cloth” (or plain – since i wouldn’t call it an intricate work of art) quilt, but i had no idea that’s what i was doing! it was using star wars sheets, but still. :)

yahaira - January 7, 2011 - 5:38 am

everything combined to make a gorgeous quilt. I love whole cloth quilts and have been daydreaming about one since I saw a very lofty one in cream at a eco-store. if I can find the perfect batting I’m going for it with some shot cotton.

Elizabeth @ Don't Call Me Betsy - January 7, 2011 - 4:58 am

Latifah, this quilt is so truly amazing! Thanks for the education on whole cloth quilts, I’d never heard the term before. Yours is just stunning. I love that stitch you used on your machine, it looks practically hand quilted! That variegated thread looks just amazing – I haven’t tried it before, but now I definitely want to!! I love the pieced binding, too. Stellar job, as always!

Debbie-Esch House Quilts - January 7, 2011 - 4:45 am

This is an amazing quilt! I love the idea of a modern whole cloth quilt. I love the thread you chose and that it contrasts on the front and blends on the back – the best of both worlds!

My Bold quilt isn’t whole cloth, but it has minimal piecing and the color and the quilting are the stars.

I tried to insert a link here, but am not sure if it will work in a blog comment. If not and you’d like to see my Bold quilt, check out my eschhousequilts photostream on Flickr.

Jack-In-The-Box Modern Baby Quilt

This must be the year of the baby! This is the fourth baby born in my office this year and we only have about 20 people! And, we still have one to go! Not to even start counting my friends. . . . But, I’m not complaining. More babies mean more fun baby gifts to…

mjb - August 30, 2010 - 11:54 am

I’m impressed that you go to the extra effort to make the onesie, burp cloth, etc! I figure a quilt is enough of a gift and stop there – not to mention your cute packaging in the basket.

beth - August 30, 2010 - 6:27 am

great quilt!! I used the giraffe print in a quilt recently and struggled with coordinating fabrics. Your choices are wonderful.

Kim - August 29, 2010 - 5:18 pm

That’s such a cool design! And the matching card is too smart!

DianeY - August 29, 2010 - 4:25 pm

“Huckleberry” Modern Baby Quilt

Does anyone else have this problem? You make a quilt as a gift for a friend or family member and then fall in love with it SO much that it is almost painful to give away? Well, this was my experience with the Huckleberry Modern Baby Quilt. Luckily I was strong and was able to…

isabelle white - May 14, 2013 - 4:54 pm

My neice recently had boy/girl twins. She saw your Huckleberry – blue circle quilt and wanted it for a boy baby quilt. At that point all I had to go on was your picture. It was a challenge to work out the pattern, simple as it is. My version was a makeshift “compass” and freezer paper to get the perfect patchwork circle center. I varied the design a bit by changing the borders. I have to admit I love the outcome. I hoped she would like it because I did! But I decided if she didn’t I would happily keep it! No chance. She loves it. I am in the process of handquilting it now. Oh and just by coincidence, I call it Jack’s quilt because,I am making it for her baby Jack.

Jennifer Damato - March 30, 2013 - 8:24 am

Please let me know if someone can make this beautiful quilt I saw on PINTREST, with the beach ball, bibs, burp cloths the one with the circle and beautiful blue color. I’d like to buy this set for a baby gift for my best friend who just became a 1st time Grandma!

Please email me back. Can the baby boys’ name be embroidered on the corner, “Ryan Timothy” ???

Love to hear from you,
Jennifer Damato, Long Island, NY

Robyn - May 6, 2012 - 6:54 am

I love your quilt, and the whole package! You have inspired me. My daughter just announced she is pregnant, and her husband is an engineer. I was looking for something he would love also, and I think your site will give me plenty of ideas. Can you tell me if you used a pattern for the bib and burp cloth? I just love those.

Robyn

Lissa - October 22, 2011 - 6:18 am

Helen - August 18, 2010 - 2:12 pm

I have loved this from the moment I saw it. Your love and time and heart will go with the quilt to the baby and the mama and daddy, and all will be blessed for many, many years.
No surprise, you’ve inspired many…including me, but Jack will be in high school before I get the courage to try something like this! :) It’s awesome.

Patty Simmons - August 15, 2010 - 5:57 am

Adorable! I need to make one right now! I mean, like, immediately! Oh, you are so so creative. I wish Missouri were closer to your guild! I’m glad to see what you’ve been up to.

Jill B - August 14, 2010 - 10:56 pm

emma - August 14, 2010 - 4:45 am

I mean, I LOVE this quilt and need to make one. But that’s an awful big circle!

I too, suffer from separation anxiety–perhaps there is a support group somewhere? If at least there are visitations it may help to assuage the sorrow of such sweet partings.( Hey I’m a chemist forgive me my poor mangled quotations.) Love the whole ensemble Latifah.

Andrea - August 11, 2010 - 4:30 pm

This is stunning. I love your designs – such a great use of colour, pattern, and calm space. I always love it when I see on my google reader that your blog has another post – always wondering what you have up your sleeeve next. Super!

Ann Champion - August 11, 2010 - 3:11 pm

The quilt is adorable! I love everything about it..the colors, the fabrics, and the quilting. I love that you added things that would have meaning to the parents. THEN..you add the darling burp cloths(let’s hope Jack is not a spitter?)and ball. TOO cute!

Mary - August 11, 2010 - 8:48 am

This is gorgeous! Thanks for sharing the link on how to sew the circles – I was really curious!

molly - August 11, 2010 - 8:13 am

You put so much of yourself in this quilt. That’s probably part of the reason it is so tough to part with. That and its incredible!

kelly - August 11, 2010 - 7:07 am
