“Gossip Girls” at the LA County Fair

I thought it would be fun to see some modern quilts at the LA County Fair, so I thought I’d enter one. It’s not really a show quilt BUT, it is definitely different than any other quilts at the fair. We usually go to either the LA or Orange County Fairs every year. My primary…

Hi- found your blog and gorgeous quilts through the Ladies Home Journal artical. In the article you state you design and draw on the I-pad. Which app do you use? I’m looking for a new one.
Love your work!

Lindsay - March 29, 2012 - 9:09 am

Loved reading your post on the MQG blog! Also, I wanted to let you know that I posted a review of Modern Blocks today and featured “Saturn’s Rings.” http://www.craftbuds.com/book-review-modern-blocks/

Babs Bayliff - March 9, 2012 - 12:13 pm

Is there a modern quilt guild in Phoenix, Az?

Sue. - January 14, 2012 - 7:13 am

Hello! Congratulations on your showing in Ladies’s Home Journal! The article was great! It is so nice to see modern quilting done by a young and modern woman! Too many times they feature old granny style ladies with old granny style quilts…not this time! Hope to see you around Flickr again!

Smiles to you!

Sue.

Hello, I saw your name in one of the magazines here in Northern Arizona. I am interested in making contact with you for discussions about how you can help me with my quilting ideas.
Your work are excellent and beautiful.

I look forward to hearing from you.

ali - October 9, 2011 - 8:57 pm

What a great design–it has so much energy and, for lack of a better word, pizazz!

liberty - October 2, 2011 - 10:56 pm

Latifah…. that’s GREAT!!!!
so fun to see your work in that fun setting.

Holly - September 28, 2011 - 4:57 pm

Good for you for entering your quilt in the fair! What a fun surprise to win a ribbon, even if it is for “tapestry”! One of the members of our guild entered a collaborative quilt into our local fair and we got first in the contemporary quilt category!

kendascrafts - September 28, 2011 - 9:43 am

congrats on the ribbon! The quilt looks great!

Alison Marie - September 27, 2011 - 8:09 pm

Way to represent! and hooray on the ribbon! I wanted to enter something this year, bit things have been a bit hectic…..This looks great finished!

Lynda M O - September 26, 2011 - 6:57 pm

Love your quilting and happy for a ribbon, too !~!

Ann - September 26, 2011 - 2:17 pm

Congrats. Did you pick up your &5 prize money…or does LA hand out larger prizes?

Melissa and Piper - September 26, 2011 - 12:44 pm

I am SO proud of you! First that you had the idea to enter it into the fair, and second that it won second place! (It should have one first.)
I think a couple of FRMQGers are going to enter quilts in the Denver County Fair next year. We’ll be sure to let everyone know if any of them win! :)

CC Baby Quilt Set, Part 2

Since Katie, Cici’s mom, is an active member of the Los Angeles Modern Quilt Guild I figured she would get lots of quilts for little Cici so I wanted to make her something more than just a quilt. I hadn’t sewed garments in a LONG time so I wanted to do this and I wanted…

I love to quilt, I started sewing at a young age also. I am drawn to bright colors and patterns also. I can’t find a quilt club for myself. I am from Pennsylvania and the old fashion quilting.

Elisabeth - January 9, 2012 - 3:02 pm

That coat is so super cute. It looks a lot like one my mom, who didn’t actually really sew, made for me when I was tiny. I still have it hanging in my closet, 50 years later. Mine was (is) sage green wool, lined with something silky, but it had a little velveteen collar.

And guess what my nickname was when I was that age? Cee-cee (because I could not say “Lisa”).

Isn’t that funny?

abi - November 29, 2011 - 8:49 pm

That little jacket is so super adorable. Great work!

Eileen - October 12, 2011 - 10:13 pm

Super super adorable! It’s such a cute set! and I’ve been looking for a dress pattern that’s not too complicated for a friend and I think I might be able to handle that dress! :)

Fabric Fascination - September 18, 2011 - 3:58 am

My daughter would love something like this for her little girl.

jeannette - September 7, 2011 - 5:02 pm

those are really nice! you did a great job on them!

Lynda M O - August 30, 2011 - 4:55 am

Beautiful outfit-your work is very professional looking. The pleated sleeves are a wonderful subtle touch that add class to the garment. Lining makes it all so much nicer, too.

Pippa - August 26, 2011 - 5:04 pm

Oh gosh, you make clothing now too?! Too adorable for words ;) As much as I love freewheeling quilting, I have to admit following clothing patterns can be very rewarding. Yours turned out beautifully.

CC Baby Quilt Set, Part 1

A dear friend of mines Katie had a beautiful baby girl, Cici in December of last year. This project was almost completed. But, it has taken me this long to finish it up and give it to her! Life sometimes happens and before you know it months have blown by! But, it was made and…

Gorgeous quilt! Once the baby is wrapped up in the blanket, the circle will be made whole. :)

Amanda - January 28, 2012 - 2:00 am

This is one of my favorite modern quilts! Just beautiful!!!

Heidi Bartle - January 6, 2012 - 10:29 pm

Oh my gosh. You blow me away! You are stupid talented!!!! You need to sell patterns for all this, or teach me. One or the other. This is awesome! Great job!

“Stairway to Heaven” Quilt Top

After many months of very little quilting, I’ve been cranking out quite a few quilt tops that have been floating around in my head. This is one of them. I’m so happy to be back to quilting too! This one is called Stairway to Heaven. Now, I don’t even know if I fully believe in…

Great job. Love this. Shows a lot of commitment.

Melissa - July 23, 2011 - 9:24 pm

I absolutely LOVE it!! I love how colorful and linear it is. Makes my creative heart sing. :)

I saw something vaguely similar in one of the Gee’s Bend books, and sketched out a plan for one of my own. I love how your steps are so skinny!

Pippa - July 20, 2011 - 5:08 am

Oh my gosh. LOVE this!

Val Campbell - July 19, 2011 - 8:56 pm

Latifah,
This just takes my breath away. I love all your quilts, but this one my be at the top of my list. Good work, lady!

Hollie - July 19, 2011 - 12:12 pm

Latifah, it’s stunning! I’m so sorry I missed the last meeting and didn’t see this in person.

Latifah - July 13, 2011 - 11:40 am

Thanks Jenny, Jan, and Vicki!

Cheryl – you totally have to make your version as well. I hate when I have an idea and someone else does it first though! But, I’d love to see what you would have done with it.

Lynette, it was a big log cabin! :-) Half way through it I started to count down the number of strips till the end. Thankfully I included some of my favorite “have to include” colors towards the end.

Thanks Kenda! I can’t wait to see it quilted too! ;-)

Jenny Pedigo - July 13, 2011 - 10:29 am

So interesting!! Love it!

Cinzia Allocca - July 13, 2011 - 5:42 am

this is AMAZING! so well done. i love the rectangle as a starter point as opposed to the traditional square! Can’t wait to see it finished.. and i love your description of it, too.
I have Susan’s book and I love it. The history is fascinating. Your fresh modern take on log cabin should be included in volume 2!

jan - July 12, 2011 - 9:08 pm

Very nice!

Cheryl Arkison - July 12, 2011 - 8:52 pm

No way! I’ve had the fabric pulled for a square version of the same concept for months now. Pretty sure yours is cooler than mine could be.

Vicki W - July 12, 2011 - 3:14 pm

That is sooooo cool!

Lynette - July 12, 2011 - 2:08 pm

Wow – That’s a BIG log cabin. :D Nice job mitering all those color strips on the one corner

kendascrafts - July 12, 2011 - 1:53 pm

wow! that looks great! Can’t wait to see it quilted. I love log cabin blocks.

A Little Something I’m Working On. . .

. . . that I think I really love! Now, to decide how to quilt it. . . any ideas?

Wow, this is really beautiful Latifah, you are unbelievably talented.

Tanya Heldman - July 15, 2011 - 9:41 am

It looks like the background is just one piece of fabric. I don’t see any seams. Amazing curve piecing. I would do something that would create a different texture in the background from the curved parts. Also, I would use different thread colors.

Ruth - July 12, 2011 - 8:17 am

I abSoLuteLy LOVE this. I don’t think it could get better.

Fabric Fascination - July 9, 2011 - 3:29 pm

If it were mine, (I can’t think as if it were yours, because then I would be afraid to ruin it), but if it were mine – I might do large leaves, and seed pods, and alien looking plants from an abundant garden. It is such an organic looking quilt that I think organic shapes would compliment it well. (If it were mine that is)

dana - July 9, 2011 - 3:44 am

I rather like the idea of quilting each shape individually and then the red background in a different color thread and different quilting pattern. I am so loving this quilt and dying that all those curves are INSET.

Cheryl Arkison - July 8, 2011 - 8:26 pm

oooh! Are those inset?

Quilting? Are you hoping to accentuate the fact that the design goes around the edge, or is there a top and bottom to the quilt? I think that decision matters when deciding on the quilt pattern.

If there is a top and bottom, then one idea that comes to mind is actually a traditional fan pattern.

If you are accentuating the all around the edge concept, then it seems obvious to quilt each shape individually. I could see red thread on the inset pieces and maybe a blue or green on the red.

Kate - July 8, 2011 - 1:51 pm

Fun!!! I’ve typed about six suggestions and erased them. I’ve got nothing! But I’m interested to see what you do :)
